The Amhara are a cultural group located in Ethiopia. They have lived in the north and central highlands of Ethiopia for over two thousand years. There are mountains surrounding the highlands, where the average altitudes there range between 7,000 and 14,000 feet. This is known as the Amhara region (Amhara: 2014).

There are roughly 20 million people who identify themselves as part of the Amhara ethnic group today. They make up approximately 27% of Ethiopia’s population. The Amhara have dominated the political scene, with only one emperor being non-Amharic in the last 1,000 years (for more information on this, see the economy tab).
The Amharic language is also popular, with over seven million speakers today. The Amhara speak Amharic, a language form the Afro-asiatic family. It is the language of Ethiopia, though it is being replaced by more regional languages. They have mainly switched to English in recent years because of the inconvenience with non-Amharic speaking majority after the second world war (Amhara People: 2014)
The Amhara consider themselves an empire. In the past, they controlled many African countries. They were highly focused on military. This proved to be useful when Europeans tried to colonize Ethiopia. The Amharic military were able to hold them off, making Ethiopia the only African country able to throw off the attempts at colonization.
They can be classified as Habesha people. The Amhara people call themselves Amhara because it means beautiful, pleasing, and gracious (Amhara People: 2014).
